With the exhibition Vicenç Viaplana, els llocs de la pintura (Vicenç Viaplana, the loci of painting), the Fundació Vila Casas seeks to promote this artist’s or by holding its largest ever exhibition to map out his career over more than forty years, which stands out as a resounding response to the purported end of painting. Through a very personal process of plastic asceticism, Viaplana creates an immersive work, with more empty spaces than full ones, more absences than presences and more losses than gains, that formalizes like few others all the uncertainty of our liquid time that is in permanent crisis.
Between the urban visions of cities in flames from the eighties to the series of plant motis “Sota el Suí” (2016-2020) (Beneath the Suí [mountain]) he has developed one of the most personal, subversive and metamorphic artistic careers among the artists of his generation, here or anywhere. His oeuvre has gradually but steadily matured unfolding in a series of concentric circles, revealing an organic whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.
