Beneath the Sui 15

"The final three works in the series "Sota el Sui" were created during the lockdown. I painted the first in this trilogy of the pandemic, Sota el Sui 15, using vegetable ashes instead of the usual pigments. The ashes endowed the work with a mineral grey effect and the lushness of the vegetation in the previous works gave way to a tangle of branches and trunks. Although the latter works are made in the same natural surroundings as the first ones, the exceptional and tragic circumstances of the pandemic determined their final result. My work involves many hours spent in the studio. It is a very lonely job, but one that is particularly permeable to the surroundings and circumstances I live through. The paintings often become my means of communication. A communication tool that is undoubtedly more efficient and complex than anything that I could say. Whilst it is necessary, once the artwork is finished the artist’s discourse is just one among many, just as believable as any other". Vicenç Viaplana
