The exhibition Ricard Duran i Bargalló (1916-1986): mirada, llum i equilibri (gaze, light and balance), curated by Eduard Bertran, invites the public on a tour of the complete works by Ricard Duran, the relatively unknown Catalan photographer who has nonetheless left us a high-quality photographic legacy.
From the perspective of Duran’s spirit of visual analysis, this exhibition is organized in two main themes of work: the first part is documentary and as a testimony to Barcelona in the final years of Francoism, and the second part has clear influences from north-American straight photography and above all the New Objectivity from interwar Germany.
The public have the opportunity to discover a Ricard Duran who has an exquisite skill in working with light, framing, composition and balance of masses. Throughout the exhibition we can see how Duran previsualizes his photographs and imagines them in his mind. He does not press the shutter until all the elements – light, composition, framing – are appropriately aligned. Nothing happened by chance.
The exhibition includes some vintage prints and for the first time we can see a small selection of unpublished colour photographs.
