“Pere Portabella: Cinema, Art and Politics” series of films at the Filmoteca de Catalunya

Wednesday 14, February , 2018 - Wednesday 28, February , 2018

The rejection of narrative-driven film and the relationship between the avant-garde and politics are key elements which position Pere Portabella as a capital figure in the development of a conceptual form of film-making which, from the early 1970s, served as a vehicle for opposition to the cultural dictates of Francoism.  The artist and ex-senator contributed to the subversion of conventional narrative with his unique eye, leading him to exhibit his work in top-flight institutions such as the MoMA, Tate Gallery, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Museo Reina Sofía and the MACBA in Barcelona. This retrospective is being held to accompany the exhibition Pere Portabella: Cinema, Art and Politics, which opened this month at the Can Framis Museum.  It also serves as a tribute to the recently deceased musician and composer Carles Santos, who regularly collaborated with Portabella. Together they created a remarkable range of unexpected synergies between image and sound track.

The screenings programmed for this series are:

- "Umbracle". Wednesday 14 February at 6.30 pm. Presented by Pere Portabella and including a tribute to Carles Santos.
Pere Portabella. 1971. Languages: English and Spanish. Subtitled in Catalan. 85'

Christopher Lee plays a man walking around Barcelona, creating an interplay of confusion between an actor decontextualized from his usual screen persona and seeing the reality of Spain at the time through the eyes of a foreigner.  The film is a strange audiovisual poem with the sorely-missed Carles Santos providing a vital sonic counterpoint and a script by Brossa.

- "Vampir-Cuadecuc". Wednesday 21 February at 6.30 pm.
Pere Portabella. 1970. Language: English. Subtitled in Catalan. 70'

During the filming in Spain of Count Dracula, directed by Jesús Franco, Portabella came up with the idea of shooting an experimental film dealing with the great horror icon using the same actor.  Christopher Lee agreed to do it.

- "Pont de Varsòvia". Friday 23 February at 7 pm.
Pere Portabella. 1989. Language: Spanish.  85'

The papers had a field day with the bizarre story of a scuba diver found dead in a burnt-out forest.  According to the papers a fire-brigade water plane had filled its tanks at sea and inadvertently scooped up a diver, later dropping him over a forest fire.

- "Die Stille vor Bach" / "The Silence Before Bach". Sunday 25 February at 7 pm.
Pere Portabella. 2007. Languages: Spanish, German, Catalan. Subtitled in Catalan. 102'

An exploration of Bach and his times, and also of his ability to seem fresh to modern ears.  A film by Pere Portabella with a significant contribution by Carles Santos.

- Triple feature. Wednesday 28 February at 6.30 pm.
The series on Pere Portabella closes with a discussion featuring Albert Serra, Professor Josep Maria Català, director of photography Tomàs Pladevall, and Esteve Riambau, director of the Filmoteca de Catalunya.

"Art a Catalunya"
Pere Portabella. 1992. Language: Catalan.  31'

Portabella superimposes the interview over the galleries, the architecture and the grandeur of the void as a temporary space (Pilar Parcerisas).

"No al No"
Pere Portabella. 2006. Without dialogue. 4'

Carles Santos plays some of his pieces for piano. Film made for the exhibition “Carles Santos. Visca el piano!” held at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona in summer 2006.

"Mudanza"
Pere Portabella. 2008. Language: Spanish. 20'

Mudanza is the response to an invitation by the curator Hans Ulrich Obrist for an intervention at the Huerta de San Vicente, museum-house of the García Lorca family in Granada.  The film is the result of a process of removal of furniture and objects so that visitors can walk freely through the rooms freighted with emotion and reverberations.
