The exhibition Pere Portabella: Film, Art and Politics features one of the most prominent political activists and filmmakers in the country. Conceived and directed by Pere Portabella and Antoni Vila Casas, the exhibition is set out in five areas which reflect the figure of Portabella from different angles.
The first area is "The return of President Tarradellas". It demonstrates Portabella’s long-standing commitment to politics, since he was in charge of organizing the return of Tarradellas from the airport to Plaça Sant Jaume. The second area centres on the film Viridiana, directed by Lluís Buñuel and produced by Portabella. Viridiana signalled the return of Buñuel to Spain and won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival, causing a major political scandal which resulted in the banning of the film in Spain and Italy. The third area is "Portabella Filmmaker" and deals with films such as Die Stille vor Bach, among others. The fourth area focuses on Portabella and his artistic environment. As a film director, producer, and political and cultural activist, Portabella has shared experiences and built up friendships with creators from different artistic fields linked to the avant-garde movements of the day. Finally, the last area entitled "Portabella and Miró" looks at the relationship between the two and focuses on two pieces by Miró which no longer exist and a screenplay by the artist which was never filmed.
The exhibition is a joint collaboration with the Filmoteca de Catalunya, which is also participating in this tribute to Portabella.
