Although he was born in the Basque Country, the photographer Yago de Orbe has lived in Ecuador since 1988. In 2002, he studied Social Documentary at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in Cuba, and he has directed documentaries on humanitarian issues related to the indigenous peoples in different countries in Latin America. Recently, he has researched non-conventional photographic processes, such as chlorophyll prints, whereby high-quality images are developed on leaves through photosynthesis. His work is inspired by samai thought, an indigenous Amazonian cosmovision of the Ecuadorian Quechua people, according to which every living being, including plants, has a vital and spiritual energy within it.
