CONTEMPORARY ART - ARTISTS COLLECTION

Joan Gardy Artigas

Boulogne-Billancourt, França, 1938

Joan Gardy Artigas’ career has been closely linked to the world of ceramics ever since his childhood. In the discipline he experiments with different techniques and materials, from clay and resin to bronze and refractory ceramics. His works range from torsos and female bodies to organic forms, building a personally defined aesthetic. As an assistant to his father, Josep Llorens Artigas, he worked together with Joan Miró. He studied at the prestigious École du Louvre and soon set up his ceramics workshop in Paris, where he collaborated with Georges Braque and Marc Chagall. Alberto Giacometti introduced him to the use of other materials within the sculptural discipline and he learnt Eastern techniques in ceramics during his time in Japan. He draws on ancient-inspired Mediterranean mythology to reflect on the human condition and life. He has exhibited at the Galería Theo in Madrid and the Instituto Español in New York, among others.
