"Whilst the paint usually covers the whole surface of the painting in the artworks from 2006 and 2007, for example Senda 2 (2007), in 2008 and 2009 the painted images tend to float above a background, often white, forming dynamic and energetic masses in movement. The brushstrokes give rise to the shape and the final image is generated by the way in which the paint is applied, as it is dispersed by the brush until it runs out. In this case, the forms we see open up and unfurl, by means of thick, curving and zigzagging brushstrokes akin to calligraphy. The image is improvised and its appearance is gestural, but rather than exploring the subconscious – as the abstract expressionists did – it is a reflective work that obeys the idea and the procedure from which it arises".
