Salvador Juanpere (Vilaplana, el Baix Camp, 1953) is a well-established artist who has dedicated over four decades to a relentless reflection on the discipline of sculpture.
Following his line of work, the exhibition, entitled Tenerse en pie (Standing), is both an exploration of the construction methods and processes involved in creating a sculpture and a meta-reflection on the profession itself. His working method connects intellect and material, thought and technique, the evolution of the discipline and its inherent poetic aura, in an indomitable will to remember the masters in the history of art.
Both the series entitled Puntelli – the puntelli are the props used in many sculptures to fasten elements and extremities to the main body of the sculpture to ensure they do not detach or break during movement, fall or transportation – and the artwork that lends its name to the exhibition, which is a life-size reproduction of the rock which forms the base for the feet of Michelangelo’s David, revolve around the resilience of sculpture. Juanpere evokes the solidity of sculpture in a period when the overall currents in art are towards liquid, immaterial and ethereal artwork, epitomized in video and performance.
Curated by Natàlia Chocarro, art adviser to the presidency at Fundació Vila Casas, this exhibition is the result of collaboration between the Centre Cultural-Llibreria Blanquerna and Fundació Vila Casas, and seeks to deepen our knowledge of contemporary creators.
