Opening: Thursday 5 March, 9 a.m.
Joaquim Chancho's work is slow and thoughtful. It requires time to execute and time to assimilate. Although his strokes may be quick, precise, and direct, they are always charged with temporality, tension, and intention. Each stroke, each color, is the result of slow maturation, of a wise and reflective attitude toward life.
This room brings together a concise and refined selection of Joaquim Chancho's work, the result of the admiration and friendship of the pharmacist from l'Ametlla del Vallès, Joan Puig Guillot (L'Escala, 1929 – L'Ametlla del Vallès, 2020), who over the years acquired an outstanding collection of the artist's works.
Upon his death, he bequeathed it to the Town Council of L'Escala, which deposited it in the Fundació Vila Casas so that it would be well preserved and accessible to all. This refined collection not only allows us to delve deeper into the work of Joaquim Chancho, but also constitutes a heartfelt tribute to a mutually influential friendship, in which time and memory live on in dialogue with the radicalism and contemporaneity of the work of one of the most outstanding artists of our time.
