Mayte Vieta (Blanes, Girona, 1971) is a multidisciplinary artist who broke onto the contemporary art scene in the 1990’s. Drawn to capturing the weightlessness of a body submerged in the darkness of the ocean, the lightness of material and the unsettling silence of solitude, the artist created the installation Cuerpos de luz (Bodies of Light), comprising of a projection of three large-format photographs in which we can discern a naked female body levitating in an almost spectral way. Produced one night in the month of May in 2009 in the sea at Blanes, the photographs may be seen as a metaphor of the cycle of life, a recurring theme in the artist’s work.
