Fundació Vila Casas presents this second exhibition at the Vila-seca Castle – thanks to a partnership with Vila-seca Town Council – dedicated to one of the most important photojournalists in the country: Agustí Centelles.
In 2010, Fundació Vila Casas acquired an important set of works by the photographer Agustí Centelles (el Grau, Valencia, 1909–Barcelona, 1985) in order to ensure that they stayed in our country. The collection features 110 vintage photographs documenting the Spanish Civil War.
Shortly before the fall of Barcelona in 1939, Centelles sought exile in France, where he recorded the experience of refugees in the internment camp where he was detained. Later on, pursued by the Gestapo, he was forced to flee the country, leaving behind, in the care of some farmers, a suitcase with 5,000 negatives that he would only recover after the transition to democracy, when the well-deserved recognition of his work began.
The collection also includes 35 R-prints – modern prints from the original negatives, made by Sergi Centelles at his father's studio – that can now be seen for the first time. In short, it is a legacy that is an invaluable testimony to the most turbulent years in our recent history.
