The exhibition Agustí Centelles.A Photographic Chronicle. The 1930’s, curated by the critic and art historian Daniel Giralt-Miracle, comprises 110 photographs printed by the artist from a collection the Fundació Vila Casas purchased in 2010 from the heirs of the man considered the first Catalan photojournalist, and which are kept in the Barcelona Photographic Archive.
The display, divided into six sections – Republic, 1931-1936; 19 July and the Outbreak of the Civil War; The Front; Portraits from the Front; The Homefront; and The Concentration Camp at Bram – is a complete visual account of what the 1930’s were like in our country. From the advent of the Second Republic to the outbreak of the Civil War and the life of refugees in French internment camps, the display shows intuitive and audacious shots, with a strong aesthetic element, of the faces of militia people, anonymous citizens and key figures such as Manuel Azaña, Francesc Macià, Lluís Companys, Buenaventura Durruti and La Pasionaria, amongst others.
The photographs in Agustí Centelles. A Photographic Chronicle. The 1930’s, are a selection made by Agustí Centelles himself of the negatives he finally recovered after the war had finished, which had been hidden in France.
