In keeping with its mission, the Espai Volart 2 gallery pays homage to the career of the painter and metalsmith Jaume Mercadé (Valls, 1889-Barcelona, 1967). Initially influenced by Fauvism, Mercadé moved onto noucentisme and produced creations infused with a calm modernity. Paisatges construïts (Constructed Landscapes) re-examines Mercadé’s urge to order landscape, fills an omission in our history, and broadens our knowledge of Catalan art. Jaume Mercadé remained loyal to the land of his birth, Tarragona, making it the subject of his work. Today the source of inspiration and the creator are indivisible and his work is seen as a distinctive blend of realism in a classical vein. The exhibition is curated by J.F. Yvars, art historian, critic and ex-director of the IVAM, who has written extensively on art in the La Vanguardia newspaper in a column entitled Art Notes.
