Josep Maria Subirachs (Barcelona, 1927-2014) is an artist with a prolific and extensive career, who has become a sculptor of reference of the post-war generation and whose innovative contributions to the history of art in the second half of the twentieth century are indisputable.
Although his open-air and monumental works have garnered public recognition and consolidated his prestige, this exhibition reveals a more intimate, human-scale Subirachs who also created many small and medium-sized pieces intended for collecting.
Curated by Ricard Mas and Judit Subirachs-Burgaya, the exhibition presents a discourse focused on one of the artist’s most prolific and creative periods, namely the transition from expressionist figuration to abstraction.
The main part of the exhibition includes series and resources such as irons, wedges, multi-material mounted pieces, penetrations and tensions, as well as the process of morphological deepening that has undoubtedly taken inspiration from the regulated geometry by Antoni Gaudí, among other influences.
