The aim of this small exhibition is to show the artwork by Carles Arqués i Tost (Barcelona, 1950–1992) that has been donated by Cèlia Tost.
The selection includes nine pieces, oils and collages, from the most constructivist painting of the seventies – when freedom of gesture and expression were paramount – to the abstraction of the late eighties. The collages from the latter period take us to a space in which time appears to standstill and weightlessness acts on the abstract forms which make up the artwork.
Arqués gained wide recognition at a young age. He trained at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and held his first exhibition, at the Sala Vayreda in Barcelona, when he was only twenty-six years old. So began a career in which he exhibited in different cities in Germany and the USA. His unexpected death the age of forty-two cut short his artistic career at its peak when it was in its most creative splendour.
Thanks to the conservation efforts and recognition of the work by his family, today we can remember Carles Arqués’s artistic career at the Sala Empordà of the Fundació Vila Casas.
