Mayte Vieta (Blanes, Girona, 1971) is a multidisciplinary artist who broke onto the contemporary art scene in the 1990’s. Drawn to capturing the weightlessness of a body submerged in the darkness of the ocean, the lightness of material and the unsettling silence of solitude, the artist created the installation “Cycle”, comprising of a projection of three large-format photographs in which we can discern a naked female body levitating in an almost spectral way. Produced one night in the month of May in 2009 in the sea at Blanes, the photographs may be seen as a metaphor of the cycle of life, a recurring theme in the artist’s work.
