In the Book of Genesis, the last creature to take its place in the world was man; the others were already there (or had already been installed there). Perhaps this is why man’s relationship with other animals has been, to say the least, conflictive.
From the moment he had to look for food and became carnivorous, animals became his sustenance. From Paradise onwards animals have suffered innumerable vicissitudes only to end up hanging from a hook in a market, laid out on ice or constricted in plastic wrap.
It is no wonder, then, that man the hunter displays his trophies in shop windows or in showcases in his house or accumulates pieces from the world of nature which take his fancy or give him pleasure. Captive beauty, the collecting of animals which are often stuffed or stuck down with a pin, is also looked at in Ànima. Its presence in the human sphere is not due to a vital need, if we may put it this way, but a pure and simple question of aesthetics and the demonstration of power.
