In 2010 the Fundació Vila Casas acquired an outstanding set of photographic works by Agustí Centelles (Grau, Valencia, 1919 – Barcelona, 1985), part of an inheritance passed on by the artist to his children while still alive. A total of 110 vintage photographs from the Spanish Civil War, original prints from the 1970’s make up the present exhibition. Soon after the fall of Barcelona in 1939 Centelles went into exile in France where he recorded the drama of the detainees in the camp where he was interned. Later, on the run from the Gestapo, he was obliged to flee the country and leave, in the safe-keeping of some farmers, a trunk of 4,000 negatives that were not recovered until the arrival of democracy, which marked the beginning of his well-deserved recognition.
