Opening: Monday 9th march, 7 p.m.
Gonçal Sobrer (Barcelona, 1932) is an artist who is difficult to classify. His career has been replete with unexpected twists and risky actions, assuming the possibility of personal failure as a libertarian option that has enabled him to denounce the collective failure. Sobrer has worked on the margins, freed up by making no concessions to fashions or the logic of the market.
His artwork articulates the denunciation through many varied languages – painting, objects, installations, happenings and performances, as well as theatre, photography and cinema – with a critical perspective that is located and almost always rooted in his home neighbourhood, Poblenou. Sobrer has mythologized it and transfigured it into a powerful contemporary political metaphor, whereby the local is projected as the universal.
This exhibition deliberately blurs the boundaries between document and work of art. It gathers together nearly two hundred pieces – many of them presented for the first time or that are little known works – and features his artwork from the sixties to the present day, focusing particularly on the most recent three decades. This exhibition seeks to confirm Gonçal Sobrer as an artist who is thoroughly relevant, necessary and disconcerting.
Exhibition curated by Pere Pedrals.
