The seven secrets of the baroque altarpiece at Santa Caterina del Montgrí

Friday 12, May, 2017 19.30 h - Friday 12, May, 2017
Palau Solterra, Torroella de Montgrí

In Catalonia, the baroque period was just as important and emblematic as the earlier gothic period had been. Nevertheless, the artistic expressions from this period are still relatively unknown. In Torroella de Montgrí, about twenty such creations – as far as we know – were made during a fifty-year period. The altarpiece at Santa Caterina was built by Joan Torras, at the height of his career in 1702. It is therefore an exquisite work in which we can see important baroque features, which enabled the author to surpass the limits of religion and add certain personalised touches.

Mr. Josep Maria Compte, plastic artist.
