The existence of Mas Gelabert has been documented since 1352. Its name first appears in title deeds held in the Crown of Aragon Archives. In 1894, Pere Coll i Rigau acquired the property upon his return from Cuba, and carried out a series of investments and improvements to the cultivation of rice – as described by Josep Pla in his study (dedicated to Coll i Rigau): Pere Coll i Rigau and the history of rice in Pals. The property is located in the municipalities of Pals, Torroella de Montgrí and Fontanilles. Its archives date back to 1725 and include a wealth of documents that describe what rural life was like in the last few centuries in the Empordà.
