The first thing Ramon Rogent would do on arriving at his studio was throw open the windows, “He would enter his studio and open the windows, flooding it with light. He would stand at his easel to work, a pigeon would perch on his shoulder and not fly away until he had stopped painting. This is the picture I have of Rogent; a luminous being during an age of darkness,” remembers painter and friend of Rogent’s, Joan Ponç.
Some of the many windows that Rogent opened – in his roles of painter, teacher and cultural activist – are ones in the field of literature. He wrote on colour, form and perspective, edited studies on the painting of Fortuny and Gimeno, illustrated literary works and developed close ties with Joan Perucho, Julio Garcés, David Sanahuja, Josep Maria Espinàs, Tomàs Garcés and Joan Vinyoli, amongst others.
In this meeting of literary equivalences, led by the painter’s son Oriol Rogent, the spirits of these authors are invoked by poems and writings illustrated by Ramon Rogent, odes and memoirs dedicated to him, as well as family memories and trips that were immortalised in words. Susanna Portell, curator of the exhibition Open the Windows: From Rogent to Roca-Sastre, hosts the event.
