Greek Coinage: Empúries

Friday 08, May, 2020 19.30h - Friday 08, May, 2020
Museu Palau Solterra, Torroella de Montgrí

Over the seventh and sixth centuries BC, the Greek inhabitants of Lydia began to appreciate the practicality of making payments with pieces of metal of fixed weight, alloyage and value. They stamped images on them as marks of guarantee.  This was the invention of coinage, along with the authority that guaranteed its fixed value.  Thus the silver drachma gave way the tetradrachm, the decadrachm and their divisions: most notably the obol, equivalent to a sixth of a drachma. Gradually other cities adopted the system: Aegina, Corinth and Athens, and later Magna Graecia, Sicily, Massalia and Emporion.
