Improvisation, virtuosity and expressiveness: three cardinal virtues of Johann Sebastian Bach, described as the "Grand Master" by violist Carl Friedrich Abel, who passed them on to his student. Abel is often thought of as the last great viola da gamba player to perform on the European stage in the 1770s, which often overshadows a key feature of his playing style: his viola da gamba, which literally made the audience cry, was first and foremost a means of expressing intimacy and sensitivity. For the same reason, his illustrious teacher chose the viola da gamba to colour the most moving moments of his passions. This programme by Lucile Boulanger traces this exquisite filiation.
