Urban art is simultaneously one of the most democratic art forms yet also one of the most divisive, from a political perspective. In the nineties, Barcelona was a haven for urban artists that attracted international figures such as Banksy and Os Gêmeos. Between 2000 and 2004, the city experienced a Golden Age of mural art which helped many local artists consolidate their careers. However, from 2006, not only did the Ajuntament de Barcelona (City Council) toughen up the restrictions on this type of art, but it also spent millions of euros removing graffiti, whilst conversely allowing mass advertising campaigns to invade historic buildings. This documentary explores the evolution of urban art in Barcelona and questions whether restrictive policies are in response to a larger global problem.
