The Vila Casas collection

The Vila Casas collection

The collection is the point of convergence where the plural vision of the collector Antoni Vila Casas meets contemporary art. It is a map of movements and decisions to accept particular works that embrace different ideologies and creative languages.  For this reason the visual discourse of the galleries of the Fundació Vila Casas – Can Framis, Palau Solterra and Can Mario – do not follow a chronological or stylistic progression, but provide an open itinerary of interconnections between various currents of art.  Encompassing the period between the 1960’s and the present, with a few previous exceptions, a number of currents of pictorial and sculptural creation in Catalonia are displayed. Only the photography collection is within an international framework.

The mission is to highlight the state of the contemporary art scene and bring it out of isolation and compensate for the lack of public and private entities, without forgetting another essential criteria: the historical mission to revive the memory of artists from earlier generations, especially the 1950-1980 period (Fin, Vilató, Ponç, Cuixart, Brossa, Clavé, Subirà-Puig, Cristòfol, Cardona Torrandell, Romà Vallès, Joan Vilacasas, Amèlia Riera, Torres Monsó, Emília Xargay, Xavier Valls, Ràfols Casamada, Hernández Pijuan, Guinovart, as well as many others).

The photography collection in the Palau Solterra, is a clear example of the integration of photojournalism (Agustí Centelles, Xavier Miserachs, Manel Armengol, Colita etc) with creative photography which, from the 1960’s on, has also been associated with other artistic means of expression (Antonio Gálvez, Rafael Navarro, Joan Fontcuberta, Pere Formiguera, Manuel Esclusa, Toni Catany, Humberto Rivas, Ángel Marcos, Jordi Guillumet, Jordi Cerdà, Paloma Navares, Ouka Lele, Chema Madoz, Jorge Ribalta,Victoria Sambunaris, Íñigo Royo, Mònica Rosselló, Mabel Palacín, Eulàlia Valldosera, Xavier Ribas, Bleda & Rosa, José Ramon Bas, Mayte Vieta etc).

The Can Framis museum of painting and the Can Mario museum of sculpture offer a broad vision of several artistic generations via artists famous for their international recognition and the impact of their work, as well as those who, for a variety of reasons, have remained on the outer edges of the art circuit.  Names such as Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, Àngels Ribé, Jaume Plensa, Frederic Amat, Jordi Colomer, Antoni Miralda, Joaquim Chancho, Antoni Llena, Alfons Borrell, Xavier Grau, María Helguera, Viladecans, Carlos Pazos, Sergi Aguilar, Susana Solano, Evru, Perejaume, Gabriel, Uclés, Robert Llimós, Agustí Puig, Francesc Ruestes, Narcís Comadira, Roser Oduber, Isidre Manils and Jordi Fulla, are joined by the younger voices of Xevi Vilaró and Gerard Fernández.
