The Can Framis Museum of Contemporary Painting is putting on, for the first time in Catalonia and the rest of Spain, a retrospective of the work of the painter Llorenç Jiménez Balaguer (Hospitalet de Llobregat, 1938). Comprising of a selection of some 30 works (including paintings, sculptures and ceramics), the exhibition aims to bring out of obscurity the work of a great Catalan artist who fell out of favour after his departure to Paris in 1959, despite his output being considered to be amongst the most avant-garde of its time. The show concentrates on his work at the time of his well-received Barcelona debut, as well as later periods in Paris. It is a surprising and unsettling body of work, characterised by excellent handling of material (the subtle juxtopositioning of string, textile and sand with colour) and a strong artistic vision.
