The Vila Casas Foundation is taking part in the homage to the painter Javier Vilató (Barcelona, 1921 – Paris, 2000) organised by the city of Barcelona in 2012. Son of the neuropsychiatrist Joan Baptista Vilató and Dolores Ruiz Picasso, sister of the world-famous artist, Vilató lived steeped in modernity. Held prisoner, together with his brother J Fin, in the internment camp in Argelès, which he got out of thanks to his uncle, he returned to Barcelona and formed a group whose aim was to revive the artistic life of Catalonia.
At the end of the 1940’s he travelled to Paris again and settled there. In the 1950’s he gained international success.
His last exhibition in the city of Barcelona was in 1999. Since then the Dalmau Gallery (with numerous exhibitions) and the Vila Casas Foundation (in 2006) have combined forces to promote the painter’s work in the country of his birth.
