The Palau Solterra Museum is once again hosting part of the Torroella de Montgrí Festival, which is now in its 37th year.
This summer’s concert is part of the Musica da càmera de Venezia, directed by Jean Tubéry and will include the following pieces: Giovanni Buonamente: Il ballo del gran duca / Giacomo Gastoldi: Questa dolce sirena / Marco Uccellini: Sonata sopra «Questa dolce sirena» / Biagio Marini: Ballo «Il Monteverde» / Aria della 'Cà Soranza' / Girolamo Kapsberger: Sfessaïna and Bergamasca / Tarquinio Merula: Ciaccona.
At the beginning of the 17th century Venice was a leading cultural hub where music recitals were regarded as an essential display of wealth for nobles in their aristocratic palaces. Monteverdi arrived in the city in 1613 to take up the post of director of music at the Basilica of San Marco and his music as well as that of his contemporaries, some of whom were members of the choir he directed, began to be played as part of the entertainment at gatherings held by local nobility. The concert programme offers a selection of this music, with some pieces being dedicated to Monteverdi.
